Shapes and Lines

Characters could start from simple shapes. Each shape has its own meaning, like round shapes are soft and nice whereas angled, pointy shapes are dangerous.

Silhouettes

If you remove detail from your character and check it as a silhouette and it still looks recognisable, it's usually a sign of a strong design.
